Restaurant Review: The Mews Restaurant

The Mews Restaurant Barbados

Snuggled tightly in the heart of Second Street, Holetown, is a quaint establishment, The Mews. A couple weeks ago we decided to try out the often raved about restaurant to see what it really had to offer.  On entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a polite gentleman who welcomed us to the lounge for some cocktails to start our night off. Scattered in their lounge are little nooks with comfortable and fashionable cushions, one of which we comfortably settled into. For our cocktails we chose the Caipirissima, which consisted of citron vodka, lime and sugar shaken to concoct a tart but still slightly sweet cocktail. Kim opted for the classic Tom Collins, which was made up of gin, lemon juice, sugar and soda water. Both good options to start off the night! We made our way upstairs to the dinner table and settled in. To start, we chose the red snapper ceviche, as red snapper was the catch of the day. Served in a chic martini glass, the red snapper was marinated in the ideal amount of citrus. The red onion in the dish provided a slightly sweet yet subtle bite and the use of orange was refreshing change and offered an interesting depth of flavour as opposed to the traditional dish being solely lime/lemon based. The ceviche had the perfect fish to vegetable ratio and was paired wonderfully with a crunchy, seasoned tortilla chip.

The other appetizer of choice was warm confit of duck served on a bed of arugula with a homemade potato rosti and an aged balsamic reduction. The duck confit had a crispy texture on the outside and was tender, moist and juicy on the inside (just how a confit should be served). The duck was deliciously rich and worked perfectly with the sweet reduction; the arugula giving the overall dish a peppery bite. It was one of those dishes that’s so comforting and flavourful, a great choice indeed.

For the main course we had Grilled Fillet of US Tenderloin served with thick cut fries, sautéed mushrooms and a peppercorn sauce. The beef was cooked perfectly medium and the mushrooms added a heartiness which complimented the beef. The homemade fries were cut thick and lightly salted with a good crispness on the outside.

We also chose the Lamb Shank Osso Buco served with Buttery Cabbage, Creamed Potato and Braised Reduction. The lamb was slow braised (for four hours) and falling off the bone tender. The based reduction it was cooked in was tomato based but had a delicate sweet flavor which balanced out the tartness of the tomato. It was hearty, comforting and paired well with the creamy and flavorful potato. The potato crisps added a layer of texture to the dish and of course impressive presentation. All in all this main course could be considered the ultimate comfort meal!

Now onto the sweet side of things- dessert. We opted for the warm apple crumble with vanilla ice cream. The apple had faint cinnamon accents and the cold ice cream coupled ideal with the warm apple tart making it a spoonful of merriness in your mouth.

Our second dessert was the cheesecake which constituted of  white chocolate, vanilla bean and mango puree. The cheese cake was creamy and perfectly sweet with the tartness of the Mango puree pulling all the ingredients together.

All in all our dinner experience was very good at The Mews Restaurant and being situated in the heart of Holetown, it is the perfect place to ‘enjoy a drink’ afterwards. We suggest having after dinner drinks in the comfort of the lounge at The Mews accompanied by the lively DJ and then you can explore what Holetown has to offer as the night goes on!
