Festival Fever: Bridgetown Market

2nd August, 2013
Bridgetown Market for Crop Over Barbados

One of the many Crop Over events in Barbados is the popular Bridgetown Market. Bridgetown Market is a favourite Bajan tradition in the Crop Over Season. It is a huge street fair that has significantly grown throughout the years. Because of its rapidly increasing size, Bridgetown Market recently outgrew its previous location, at the Pelican Craft Centre on Harbour Road and is now located on Spring Garden Highway. It usually takes place the last weekend of the Crop Over Season, which is the weekend of Kadooment Day (this weekend). Bridgetown Market is open on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday before Kadooment Monday, but Sunday is the biggest day for Bridgetown Market. Colourful stalls and kiosks line the street, and locals and visitors come out to celebrate. Bridgetown Market features all types of products, including local arts and crafts, fashion, and of course, some indigenous food and lots of drinks! There is local entertainment galore, featuring Steel Pan concerts, folk groups, tuk bands, stick licking, stilt walking and constant music which amplifies the vibrancy of the atmosphere, such as calypso, soca, reggae and our very own spouge music. This is a weekend of pure fun, and when you come to visit, not only will you be able to take home some locally made souvenirs of one of Barbados’ favourite times of the year, but you will have memories to last a lifetime! Bridgetown Market is a sure way to get a real feel of Barbados’ culture.
